Description

Nagoya University is seeking a highly skilled specialist in science communication/science writing to produce English press releases and other materials communicating the findings of research originating from our university. The person will fill a position in a brand-new university international public relations office, to begin April 1, 2022.

Primary duties: This person is the chief producer and editor of science writing that communicates the findings of research originating from Nagoya University. They will convert complex scientific information into interesting and accurate language; promote Nagoya University research; create English-language press releases related to research results; collaborate with researchers to develop press releases aimed at an international audience; and fulfill other duties related to international public relations. The primary language for content creation is English but content should be created from both English and Japanese sources. The working environment will use a mixture of English and Japanese. Employment by contract, renewable for three years from hire.

An ideal candidate will have:
1) A Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in Communications, Science Writing, Journalism, Engineering, a Natural Science, or Medicine
2) Experience writing and editing science news in English, preferably for higher education or science-oriented organizations, newspapers, or magazines
3) Native level English proficiency
4) Applicants with a degree in a related discipline as mentioned above, or with experience as a science writer or journalist, do not require any Japanese language proficiency. Other applicants should have passed Japanese Language Proficiency Test N2 or above

Working hours: Monday-Friday 8:30-17:15 (1 hour lunch break included)

Working Conditions: Most of your duties will be related to producing press releases to be posted on the Nagoya University website and sent to news release distribution services such as EurekAlert! An important part of your job will be to build relations with Nagoya University's research community and familiarize yourself with their research output. You will read published scientific papers in different disciplines to identify material for press releases. You will then use the scientific papers and discussions with their authors to communicate their findings to an international audience. You will find many topics to write about, including new research from Nobel laureates and other highly cited researchers. Nagoya University is especially strong in Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, Transportation Science and Technology, Agricultural Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering. As you will be an integral member of a new international team of 5-7 people operating a new office, you will have the chance to shape a diverse and productive office culture. You will report to the director of the International Public Relations Office, who will then report directly to the Vice-President of International Affairs. Although you will come to the office most days, there will be opportunities to work from home as well. You will work at Nagoya University's Higashiyama Campus in a leafy suburb of the city. It is within walking distance of Higashiyama Botanical Gardens and Higashiyama Zoo. Nagoya Station is about 20 minutes away by subway. There are several kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and other universities in the area. For staff, Nagoya University operates its own daycare center and after-school care for elementary school children. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who wishes to use their scientific writing skills in a challenging but intellectually stimulating environment.

Compensation: 4 million yen to 7 million yen per year. Salary will be determined based on the applicant’s experience and other qualifications. Also included are health insurance (National Public Officers Mutual Aid Association), employee’s pension, employment insurance, worker’s compensation insurance.

Preferred Personality: We are looking for someone who can work as a member of a small team in a bilingual environment. The person should be enthusiastic about the challenge of building the new International Public Relations Office and promoting Nagoya University research.
