Rationale

To provide practical and technical art and design technology support in order to allow teaching staff to best utilize their time for collaboration, planning and assessing for student learning.

Job Description/ Duties

Supporting staff and students with technical queries, promoting sustainability and reuse of materials, balancing health and safety and creativity in a workshop and practical classroom environment. Supporting teaching and learning in visual art and design technology through the management and maintenance of materials, tools, equipment, stores and teaching spaces. Have a technical frame of mind and the ability to resolve specialist visual art and design technical issues.

Potential duties for Visual Art & Design Technology technical support

Visual Art Duties (MS,HS/IB)
Operating pug machine -1-2 hours per week
Mixing glazes & creating colour coded systems, testing glazes, labelling glazes.
Creating slip and making up slip jars for all ceramics classes
Preparing and firing ceramics - Bisque and Glaze fires (programming kilns). Heavy lifting- loading and unloading the kilns.
Managing kiln room & maintenance of ceramic equipment (e.g. washing shelves) Supporting , ES, MS,HS firing cycles and safe transportation of ceramics.
Refilling materials trays, paints, glazes, mixing dyes, refilling glues etc..
Cutting paper/clay/fabric to a range of sizes
Maintaining paper storage (count/refill/ order)
Supporting teachers in lessons set up and set down for single period practical lessons or back-to back lessons (preparing paints, dyes etc..)
Ensuring equipment is maintained & regularly tested and serviced / performing repairs to equipment
Supporting Japan (in Japanese - reading and writing) supplies order & stocktaking, organisation of materials
Supporting for mounting, labelling work, artscape exhibition set up and end of year exhibition
Supporting for mounting, labelling work/ framing work, for around campus displays
Regularly monitor the condition of our corridor displays.
Supporting in extra-curricular visual arts activities eg. art workshops, trips, art clubs
Sharing technical expertise and support with IB visual art students during practical workshops. Supporting IB student special construction projects.
Supporting the coordination of the set up of the IB art exhibition (liasing with facilities team, supporting IB students to label, frame and mount work)
Stocktaking materials
Health and safety storage, recording and labelling and safe disposal of chemicals in accordance to local laws.



Visual Art Duties ES
Mixing glazes & creating colour coded systems, testing glazes, creating glaze charts for ES
Creating slip and making up slip jars for all ceramics classes. Cutting and wedging clay. Wrapping and spraying and labelling class sets of clay. Providing technical and practical support for ceramics lessons.
Preparing and firing ceramics, transporting loads of student clay work from ES art room to MS/HS kiln for firings - Bisque and Glaze fires. Heavy lifting- loading and unloading the kilns of ES work.
Support for sanitizing all materials/art tools and preparation of 25 sets of materials each class.
Creating materials packs for practical lessons. Refilling materials trays, mixing and maintaining paints, glazes, mixing dyes, refilling glues, cutting materials, taping metal tooling sheets etc.. Regularly maintain equipment and resources.
Supporting Japan (in Japanese - reading and writing) supplies order & stocktaking, organisation of materials. Stocktaking materials and replenishing.
Support for mounting, labelling work for artscape exhibition and for wall displays. Supporting creation of display and maintenance of displays.



Design Technology Duties (MS,HS,IB)
Prepare materials and resources as required by the subject teachers, prior to lessons.
Supporting teachers with the delivery of practical lessons.
Regularly maintain the equipment and tools in the workshop and classroom areas.
Monitoring and maintenance of consumables and equipment in the department.
Keep all classrooms organised and free from hazards in accordance with local health and safety regulations.
To assist staff in developing appropriate resources for teaching and learning.
Maintaining inventory and supporting with ordering and sourcing materials.
Supporting with year round displays and the annual Art, Design and Technology exhibition
Processing student work through 3d Printers, laser cutters etc.
Ensure all tools are kept in optimum condition and stored correctly
Maintenance and calibration of machines, such as 3d Printers, laser cutters and workshop power tools.
